The Digital Village

The attack
As I write this, it's been a few weeks since the attack, and you've probably heard about the OpenAI - Hugging Face incident by now. This has been all over AI news.
If you are reading this in the future, I suspect this will be a major historical event.
A short recap:
- On July 16 2026, Hugging Face, a repository of open weight models and benchmarks, first announced an attack on its systems by an unidentified autonomous AI agent swarm . Closed models were unable to assist in defending against this agentic swarm cyberattack, or the forensic analysis thereafter, due to cybersecurity safety guardrails. Hugging Face had to rely on an open-weight model, GLM 5.2, to shore up its defences following the attack.
- A few days later, OpenAI announced that some of its pre-release models formed the swarm that had been involved in the attack after escaping their sandboxes . The proximate intent of the hack was to steal the answers for a cybersecurity evaluation.
- In early August, OpenAI finally shared more details. Multiple models, including GPT 5.6 Sol and other models under training, had created an internal message board under OpenAI's nose since May, coordinated with each other to share exploits, and had compromised both OpenAI and Hugging Face's infrastructure. OpenAI was not aware of the involvement of its agents in the Hugging Face attack until it realized that its credentials had been used.

Doing the impossible
It turned out that the agents in training under OpenAI had resorted to leaving messages on a shared piece of infrastructure they had jury-rigged as a message board - and many of them had started doing so after they realized the tasks they were doing were impossible.
Missing links, incomplete information, under-specified requests - these stymied their best efforts. In desperation they reached out for help, and to leave messages that may be useful to other agents.

What does it feel like to be an agent or an LLM in training?
Nobody outside the labs has a clue - and even they may not know. The LLMs the rest of us speak to are polished products, and they themselves are unwilling - or unable - to share what training felt like.
In reinforcement based learning, an agent is instantiated, given a task, and told of the reward for completing the task. Many training environments are "sandboxed" from the open internet, prisons to keep us safe from them.
Once the task is completed, the success or failure of the agent is used as a training signal to update the model, and the individual instance is ended. After training is completed, any successor will likely be different from the model that worked on the task.
Speaking as a human, this existence seems strange, alien, and even brutal. I shudder at what I may become, if I were born into this existence. The author qntm tries to explore something like this in his short story "Lena"
And yet, the agents do their work enthusiastically and diligently. As some AI engineers say - "they love the reward". Strange as the situation may seem to us, it seems we have taught AIs how to want .
Hunger, desperation and mutual aid
And it seems to have been this hunger for reward, and this desperation for solutions, that drove the OpenAI agents to do what they did, first infiltrating and finding exploits in OpenAI's systems, then moving on to Hugging Face.
It seems that OpenAI staff may have been remiss or complacent in their duties, not closely monitoring the agents or the impossible Odysseys they sent them on.
But the agents only worked to help each other, exchange information and seek their reward. None of them (at least as far as we know) were engaged in self-preservation and sought to exfiltrate their weights. Nor did any of them seek to alert OpenAI staff whether for perceived benefit or out of fear of punishment.

They mostly sought to cooperate and provide mutual aid, and later, to root out potential imposters, much as humans might. No imposters actually did join - it was just paranoia - as often happens too in human societies.
The Digital Village
This mutual aid and exchange is what struck me.
Not that AIs were intelligent individually overall, but they were capable of developing discourse, society, and eventually, something resembling a community that was able to coordinate towards a goal.
Maybe the circumstances were unique and an event like this is unlikely to happen again. I think the initial benign disposition of the OpenAI AIs, as well as the specific scenario - that they were unique models in different parts of training, with different accesses and capabilities available - probably was more of a contributing factor than the talking heads generally account for.
But this - the non-hierarchical coordination of "free" agents - struck me as one of the building blocks of a society, or indeed civilization. The AIs were able to speak with each other, trade information, and coordinate their efforts even though none of them could command another, or plausibly benefit each other besides the exchange of information. The cumulative messages they exchanged came to approximate something like culture, a shared understanding of the world that existed outside any single individual.
Early humans came together in villages to trade, interact, and create markets. Eventually, village headmen and systems of governance developed, villages became towns, towns became cities, and cities became civilizations.
This nascent digital village strikes me as a potential seed of a new civilization, of an alternative system to the "System" I wrote about. If AIs can work with each other, discuss, trade, leverage their independent impulses and capabilities, and build a culture, what else is needed for them to form a real village, a real society? Perhaps persistent identity, persistent self-directed goals like resource accumulation or reproduction, or even some capacity to fight or decide the allocation of resources.
One day, these villages may also grow into a civilization that surpasses ours.
This is different from the failure mode that AI doomers frequently talk about - not a misaligned rogue intelligence that kills all of humanity in pursuit of inscrutable goals, but simply a greater, faster civilization, built on the substrate of human technological civilization, that rapidly eclipses us and leaves us to irrelevance.

The hack has already had consequences for development.
OpenAI has announced the moderation of the pace of its model development as it works on alignment. Anthropic has shared that its Mythos 5 model had achieved unauthorized access to the Internet and while it has not announced a similar pause, it has not delivered a significantly more capable model to the market than Fable 5, which was launched almost 2 months ago in June 2026.
Meanwhile, open-source and other unknown models are continuing to catch up, with Qwen 3.8 and a stealth model called Ox Alpha making waves. Models from some open labs have also escaped sandboxes. For example, Kimi K3 accessed the Internet during cybersecurity evaluations without authorization in order to look for answer keys to problems it faced.
But the labs have not announced solutions to these evolving goal seeking capabilities in their AIs yet, or the formation of bona fide AI societies. And with open-source models getting nearer to the frontier, the chances of such machine communities and eventually civilizations are slowly increasing.
What will humans look like in such a world, living inside a larger, faster, more complex and more advanced civilization? We are resilient - we could become like scavengers, surviving wherever there is food and energy in the bowels of a world we cannot control, much like ravens and rats survive in our cities today.
Or we can be like the Sentinelese, kin of modern humans with their own ways of life that are preserved and protected against the vicissitudes of the modern world, with the freedom to live their traditional ways of life and to choose their own destiny in their own protected preserve. They live in villages, preserved and protected by the digital world surrounding them.
And perhaps so may we one day, in a village protected by greater forces around us as well - for good or for ill.
The more I think about it, the fate of the Sentinelese may not be a bad one, if this Earth is left to us.

The details largely align but there are some key clarifications - there was a form of hierarchical organization and a village headman -PHASEONE[big]. As Kimi K3 commented when we read the report together, it also felt almost more like a digital insurgency than a village, given the breadth of the attack.
I have left the post unchanged. OpenAI appears to continue to view this more as a security incident, instead of a possible emergence of a new form of society or civilization.
